Batting

Quilt batting is essential to any quilt, providing insulation and thickness to the finished product. Two common materials used in quilting are polyester and an 80/20 cotton-polyester blend. Polyester is less expensive, lightweight, dries quickly, and is hypoallergenic. At the same time, polyester offers extra loft and resiliency.

In contrast, 80/20 cotton-polyester blend batting offers the softness and breathability of cotton. The blend combines cotton and polyester fibers to create a batting that is both warm and lightweight. In addition, the cotton content provides a soft, natural feel that is comfortable against the skin.

The 80/20 cotton-polyester blend batting is versatile and suitable for various quilting projects. It is warm enough to use in cold weather and lightweight enough for warmer climates. It is also durable enough to hold up to frequent use but still soft enough to snuggle under on the couch. However, it tends to be more expensive than polyester batting. There may be better choices for quilters who prefer to use only natural materials in their projects.

Of course, each quilt is unique and loftier options may add interest and texture to the quilt. Also, as in the case of baby quilts, specialty batting may be an option. (See Dream Angel)

Ultimately, the best choice for your project will depend on your preferences and the specific requirements of the quilt you require.
